United Way NWT is pleased to announce the appointment of Mandi Parkes (they/them) as our new Executive Director, marking an exciting new chapter for the organization as it continues to strengthen and support communities across the North.
After recently supporting a large federal initiative centering on Emergency Response and Recovery efforts in the North, Mandi steps into the role with a deep commitment to community care and resilience.
With more than 12 years of experience in the non-profit sector, Mandi brings a wealth of knowledge in programming, operations, and fundraising, along with a diverse background spanning social services, youth development, recreation, and the arts.
“United Way NWT plays a vital role in connecting people, resources, and solutions across the territory,” said Ben Linaker, Board Chair of the United Way NWT. “Mandi brings a thoughtful, collaborative leadership style and a genuine passion for community building. We are excited to welcome them and look forward to the impact they will help drive across the North.”
Mandi’s path into the non-profit sector has been shaped by a broad educational background, including a specialization in Kinesiology, which led them into the social services and recreation fields. They have since built on that foundation with certifications in Event Management and Community Engagement, always with a focus on creating inclusive and accessible opportunities for people to participate and connect.
An avid recreation and music enthusiast, Mandi has been actively involved in Northern community life, serving as Head Coach for the NWT snowboard team from 2021 to 2026 and contributing to the Artist Selection Committee for Folk on the Rocks festivals from 2024 to 2025. Their passion lies in sharing the joy of recreation and the arts with the next generation, and in finding equitable ways to bridge gaps in access and participation.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead a Northern organization and to work alongside communities across the Northwest Territories,” said Mandi. “United Way NWT has built strong relationships rooted in trust, collaboration, and care. I’m excited to continue growing the organization’s capacity and supporting community-centred work that creates lasting impacts for Northern communities and individuals.”
“On behalf of the Board, I would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Linda Bussey for her outstanding leadership as Executive Director for the past two and a half years,” said Ben. “Linda played a critical role in supporting communities during the evacuations of Whatì and Fort Providence, and in guiding United Way NWT’s long-term recovery efforts following the 2023 wildfire season.
She also led the development of the organization’s new strategic plan and strengthened internal policies, helping ensure United Way NWT’s continued impact and sustainability. We are deeply grateful for her dedication and service.”
