YELLOWKNIFE, December 11, 2024—United Way NWT is pleased to announce the launch of a new wildfire recovery and emergency preparedness program. With funding support from the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, this 30-month program will help Northern communities continue to recover from the impacts of recent wildfires while building capacity to address future challenges.
As part of this program, United Way NWT will invest $1.472 million across three key initiatives to address recovery needs and strengthen emergency response capabilities.
- Hosting a territorial gathering in the spring of 2025 for NWT non-profits, communities and local governments to reflect on their emergency response experiences and develop risk awareness, mitigation, and emergency planning skills.
- Providing funding to non-profits to create emergency plans and enhance community preparedness.
- Supporting communities and Indigenous governments with funding to develop psycho-social support plans for individuals impacted by the 2023 wildfire season.
“This program represents an important opportunity to continue our work helping Northern communities recover from recent emergencies while equipping them to face future challenges,” said Paul Gillard, Chair of United Way NWT’s Board of Directors. “We are thankful to the federal Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness for their support and look forward to working closely with our partners to deliver this vital work.”
