When the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessary lock-down measures disrupted community services, Canadian seniors who depend on those services for support became increasingly vulnerable and isolated. On March 29, to provide immediate essential services to seniors during the pandemic, the Government of Canada announced a grant of $9 million under the New Horizons for Seniors Program to be distributed through the United Way Centraide Canada network.

An increase in maximum funding and an extension for donations and applications
Due to the great success of fundraising efforts around the Together We Are Strong Campaign, the Yellowknife Community Foundation has generously agreed to increase their matching maximum to $75,000!
Additionally, Together We Are Strong is now accepting donations and applications until 29 May!
The Together we are strongpartnership between the United Way Northwest Territories and the Yellowknife Community Foundation was announced yesterday and is already generating attention in the media.
On Monday Meghan Kennedy, the volunteer chair of United Way NWT’s Covid-19 committee, had an interview with Cabin Radio to talk about the New Horizons for Seniors program that the United Way NWT is helping implement in the Northwest Territories.
“We’re looking to support basic needs first and foremost like food and hygiene products, including getting them to the communities," said Kennedy.
The United Way NWT awarded 22 non-profit organizations new funding as part of its annual Community Investment Fund.
20 successful applicants will receive up to $7,500 for 2020 programming and one successful candidate will receive a multiyear grant. They will receive $15,000 each year
for three years. The Yellowknife Women’s Society Court Outreach and Support program will continue with their second year of Multi-year funding.
