About the Gathering

United Way NWT invites representatives from NGOs, Communities and Indigenous Organizations to a four-day gathering focused on service continuity, wellness, and recovery in times of crisis. Through expert-led workshops and hands-on training, participants will develop strategies to maintain critical services, support community well-being, and strengthen emergency preparedness in the North.

  • All travel, accommodations, food, and Psychological First Aid (PFA) training certification costs are covered for attendees.
  • Up to two representatives from Non-Government Organizations and Community or Indigenous Governments in the NWT can register.

Gathering Schedule

April 24-25 | Conference: Service Continuity, Wellness & Recovery

Day 1: Setting Foundations for Service Continuity (April 24)

  • Opening Ceremony – With Keynote Speaker Laurie Pierce.
  • Topic 1: Recovery & Resilience – Understanding the long-term impacts of crisis and rebuilding stronger.
  • Topic 2: Building Your Service Continuity Plan – Practical steps to keep essential services running during disasters.

Day 2: Roadmap to Wellness & Recovery (April 25)

  • Topic 1: Understanding Psycho-Social Support – The role of mental well-being in disaster recovery.
  • Topic 2: Mapping Your Strengths – Identifying community assets for resilience.
  • Topic 3: Strengthening Your Circles – Building networks for mutual aid and long-term support.
  • Topic 4: Gathering Your Knowledge – Applying lessons learned to future preparedness.
  • Closing Ceremony

April 26-27 | Post-Conference Training: Psychological First Aid (PFA) Certification Training

Day 3 & 4: This two-day training, led by the Red Cross, provides essential skills to support individuals and communities during and after crises. Participants will receive official PFA certification upon completion.

  • Foundations of Psychological First Aid.
  • Trauma-Informed Approaches to Community Resilience.
  • Crisis Communication, Responding to Loss & Grief.
  • Peer Support & Care Systems.

United Way NWT is pleased to announce the launch of a new wildfire recovery and emergency preparedness program, with funding support from the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. This 30-month program will help Northern communities continue to recover from the impacts of recent wildfires while building capacity to address future challenges, focusing on three key areas of recovery, resilience, and preparedness.
