Community Investment Funding Announcement

United Way NWT Announces its Annual Funding Recipients for 2015

Yellowknife, NT (January 19, 2015): United Way NWT has approved $91,500 worth of grants to 21 organizations across the Northwest Territories.  United Way NWT earmarked $65,000 for 2015, but thanks to the generosity of its donors, that amount increased.

Twenty-five organizations from all over the NWT applied for the funds, and the Board of Directors approved 21 projects.

“We noticed a surge in applications from organizations that provide emergency food supplies, such as food banks and soup kitchens,” says David Connelly, chair of the Community Investment Committee. “We also had a number of requests for programs for children and youth which fit in our focus areas,” he added.

For the first time since broadening its focus to the whole territory, United Way NWT is funding projects in Fort Smith, Fort Providence, Hay River, the Sahtu; as well as, Inuvik and Yellowknife.

“We are very excited about the projects that the United Way will be supporting this year,” “They will make a difference in their communities, and that’s what we are looking for, says Tracy St. Denis, chair of  the United Way NWT.

The volunteer Community Investment Committee reviewed the projects. “We received some excellent applications this year, asking for three times as much money as we have available,” says St. Denis. “I want to thank the committee for their help in screening the applications and making recommendations,” she added.

The decisions were based on the need for funding and how well they fit the three focus areas:

  • From poverty to possibility
  • Healthy people, strong communities
  • All that kids can be

The United Way raises money through workplace campaigns and special events. “We are grateful for the high level of support we get from different levels of government, businesses, labour and individuals to support the work we do,” St. Denis says.
